VR experience using 360-degree video (VR360 project)
In this project, “360-degree video” refers to video footage captured with a 360-degree camera. This type of video enables viewers to see subjects in all directions around the camera.
Such video can be viewed on a PC or smartphone screen using compatible application software. However, by applying it as the surface material of a spherical object in a VR space, it becomes possible to create an immersive experience using a head-mounted display (HMD).
At the same time, viewing 360-degree video in VR is based on the participant’s freedom to move their viewpoint. As a result, viewers may focus only on “what they want to see” and may miss “what the creator wants to show.” This issue can interfere with the communication of the content or story embedded in the recorded video.
In other words, the composition of 360-degree video works in VR requires storytelling methods that differ from those used in conventional video works. This project constructively explores the possibilities of VR experiences using 360-degree video while examining these issues.
